The Big Idea
Each year, roughly 12 million young minds enter universities across Africa — a continent rich in talent, resilience and wisdom, yet facing a real and rising mental-health challenge. The opportunity in front of us is extraordinary: to unlock human potential across entire lifespans, marrying the lived wisdom of African communities with the global science of human flourishing.
That is the work of a Flourishing Centre — to research what helps people thrive, to teach it, and to put it into everyday hands, from a student's first day at university to long after their last day of work.
The Origin Thread
Dr Alten du Plessis earned his Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology from The Flourishing Center, New York — and returned home with a conviction: that the science of flourishing belongs in Africa, adapted for African contexts and shared widely.
This is his initiative to bring that vision home — to run a Flourishing Centre from 12 Murray Street, Stellenbosch, grounded in 30 years of student-success and institutional-research work, and to invite universities, funders and communities to build it together.
A Flourishing Centre is more than a building. It is a hub where research, education and practice meet — turning evidence into resources that reach far beyond any single campus or city.
